Weston-super-Mare AFC are delighted to announce that Winger Opi Edwards has signed for the Club.
The winger has played in almost every pre-season friendly as a trialist.
The 24-year-old joins us with plenty of experience in first-team football so far, having won the National League South title with Torquay United in 2019 and pulling on the shirt of Bath City & Forest Green Rovers amongst others.
On the signing, Manager Scott Bartlett said:
Opi is a very good signing for us.
“He has played at a higher level and rightly has aspirations of getting back into full-time football. He has come in, got his head down and worked really hard for the team. That has shown in the way he has trained and his performances on the pitch.
“Anyone we sign has to have a ‘team first’ mentality and he definitely has that.
“Obviously he has quality, experience and blistering pace so we are delighted to add him to our squad”.
After signing his contract, Opi said:
“I’m really excited to get started this season.
“Last season for the Club was amazing and the aim is to continue with that kind of success this season as well.
“The boys have been welcoming and the group is looking strong going into this season.”
Opi started his youth career with the Bristol Inner City Academy before being picked up by Bristol City at the age of 15, going on to sign a two-year scholarship in 2015 to join their Under-18 squad at Ashton Gate. He progressed to sign a professional contract in April 2017 alongside former Weston players George Nurse, Aaron Parsons and Harvey Smith.
In October 2017, he got his first experience of senior football by joining National League South club Bath City on a two-month loan, which was later extended for an additional month in December of that year. During his first spell at Twerton Park, he scored one goal and assisted two in 11 games before being recalled a couple of weeks early by his parent club.
In January 2018, he started for the Robins against Watford in the FA Cup Third Round, losing 3-0 to the Hornets.
He signed for National League side Solihull Moors on loan until the end of the season in January 2018, making five appearances for the club before being recalled early in March 2018.
Opi rejoined Bath City on loan until the end of the season in March 2018, scoring two and assisting three across ten appearances for Jerry Gill’s men.
The quick winger was on the move again the following season, joining National League South side Torquay United on an initial one-month loan in August 2018 which was then extended until the season’s end. During his first spell at Plainmoor, he made 17 appearances and was an unused substitute once, scoring three goals and assisting five as Torquay marched to the National League South title.
He spent the 2019 pre-season with Bristol City’s first team, including a trip to Florida, before rejoining National League club Torquay United on a three-month loan in August 2019. He managed to net two goals in seven appearances for Gary Johnson’s side, being an unused substitute once.
During the 2020-2021 season, Opi was handed an opportunity with Bristol City’s first-team, assisting one goal in four appearances while being an unused substitute nine times throughout the season. However, upon the expiration of his contract that summer, Opi departed Ashton Gate with some Championship experience to his name.
In June 2021, he joined League Two club Forest Green Rovers on a free transfer and made four appearances while being an unused substitute 11 times.
With first-team football hard to come by, Opi returned to National League side Torquay United on loan until the end of the season, making six appearances and being named an unused substitute three times.
He departed Forest Green at the end of his contract in the summer of 2022.
In September 2022, Opi got an opportunity abroad when joining MLS Next Pro club Rochester New York, making four appearances during his limited time abroad in America.
Returning to England in early 2023, Opi signed for National League South club Bath City, scoring one and assisting one in six games, winning the Somerset Premier Cup along the way against Paulton Rovers.
Opi is available for sponsorship. If you would like to sponsor Opi, then please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We would like to welcome Opi to the Club, and wish him all the best when pulling on the Weston shirt.
