Bath City 0 (5) - 0 (6) Weston-super-Mare AFC
13 Feb 2024 - 19:45Twerton Park

A 6-5 win on penalties following a 0-0 draw in normal time sent the Seagulls into the Somerset Premier Cup semi-finals at the expense of Bath City.

Former Seagull Scott Wilson had the game’s first shot, his attempt from 18 yards deflected over the bar for a corner. Wilson then had another attempt inside the area when spinning from Richard Chin’s low cross, but his shot was blocked by Lloyd Humphries. Chris Lines then drove over the bar from the edge of the area when receiving a layoff from one of his Bath counterparts.

Dayle Grubb had Weston’s first shot from 25 yards, curling a 25-yard free-kick over the bar before Wilson sliced an attempt wide from a similar distance down the other end.

At the start of the second half, Grubb dragged a shot wide of the near post from 25 yards after cutting inside from the left-hand side, before Lines saw a shot from 20 yards deflect over the target down the other end. James Dodd then drove over the bar from a similar distance after a loose ball rolled his way following half-time substitute Rex Mannings’ tackle on a Bath player.

Grubb volleyed over the target from 18 yards following Bastin’s dinked cross being headed away to him, before the Weston defender dragged a shot wide of the near post following a corner being headed back in his direction. Substitute Joe Raynes’ cross was then almost put into the net by James Alabi at the back post, but his header narrowly evaded the target.

Grubb saw a free-kick from the right headed narrowly wide by Humphries, before Mannings had the game’s first shot on target with a 25-yard attempt that was held by Casa Grande. Substitute Keiran Thomas then fired wide from long range on the break down the right when being released by Mannings.

The game was to be decided by a penalty shootout, with both sides dispatching their first five penalties. Max Harris then pulled off a good stop to deny Jack Batten from the spot, before Dodd found the roof of the net thanks to a helping hand from Casa Grande to send Weston into the semi-finals.
