Billericay Town v Weston super Mare

Billericay Town 4 - 2 Weston super Mare
18 Aug 2018 - 15:00New Lodge

In a fairly even game, Weston came away with nothing to the table toppers in Billericay Town.

Billericay broke the deadlock early on when Joe Kizzi picked up a loose pass from the Weston midfield and slipped through Jake Robinson, who finished calmly into the corner past Luke Purnell.

Gethyn Hill’s shot from an Alex Byrne corner was deflected wide by Dean Inman, and from the resulting corner, Jarrad Welch’s shot was blocked on the line before home keeper Louis Wells could gather the ball.

Welch’s 25 yard shot was blocked by Inman after Scott Doe poorly headed a free-kick down to the Welshman, as just before half-time a Kizzi cross flicked off the head of Adam Coombes and off the thigh of Louis McGrory, resulting in a Billericay corner.

Hill fired over the bar after the interval as he picked up a deflected left-footed Welch cross from out on the wing.

Billericay doubled their lead though when Purnell palmed away a shot from Coombes, with left-back Jake Howells racing onto the ball. The defender fired into the back of the net to double the advantage for the home side.

Danny Waldren’s shot from 18 yards was deflected wide by Welch after rushing out to meet the short corner, before a Hill knockdown to Welch allowed the in-form midfielder space to fire at goal from 20 yards. His shot came off the leg of Doe, and Wells tipped it aside for a corner.

Substitute Moses Emmanuel was played in on goal, but Purnell saved well with his feet. From the throw-in that followed, the ball was whipped into the box, a header was knocked back across goal, Jake Lee attempted to control the bal dangerously inside his area and Emmanuel nipped in to poke past Purnell.

Weston pulled one back when Alex Byrne held off two Billericay defenders, and found captain Jacob Cane. The skipper got the ball out his feet, and curled the ball into the far corner for 3 – 1.

Welch cushioned the ball down for Hill, but the striker’s scuffed effort was easily into the hands of Wells.

Weston got a deserved second when a short corner from Welch to Plummer led to the winger finding Byrne in space. The left-back crossed the ball in to the mixer, a Billericay foot nudged the ball towards goal, Wells pushed the ball away and centre-back Jake Lee lashed the ball into the net.

Billericay’s fourth came after substitute Alfie Potter burst away, with Lee the only one tracking back. The defender brought Potter down as the last man, and was shown a straight red card by referee Matthew Russell. The clinical Robinson stepped up to the dead ball, and he curled into the far corner to make it 4 – 2.

One last chance would come for Weston, when Plummer was fouled outside the box. Welch stepped up to the free-kick, and his curling effort rebounded off the post and away from danger.
