Chelmsford City v Weston-super-Mare AFC

Chelmsford City 1 - 1 Weston-super-Mare AFC
29 Jan 2024 - 19:45The Melbourne Community Stadium

A late Jacob Jagger Cane goal in second-half injury time saw Weston return from Chelmsford with a point following a 1-1 draw.

Anthony Wordsworth had the game’s first attempt when he volleyed over from 25 yards, before Lloyd Humphries sliced an effort wide from a similar distance down the other end with Weston’s first shot.

The Clarets were to break the deadlock when a loose pass in the Weston midfield allowed Jermaine Francis to pick up the ball and drive down the right, his low cross falling for Ody Alfa inside the area who swept a shot past Max Harris first-time.

Jagger Cane fired wide from 18 yards following a short corner routine, before Humphries had an effort deflect inches wide of the post. From the corner, the Welshman narrowly glanced skipper Dayle Grubb’s corner wide in the final shot of the first half.

At the start of the second half, the Clarets were given the chance to extend their lead from the penalty spot when Keiran Thomas was penalised for fouling Charlie Ruff as he attempted to head an aerial ball away. Callum Jones stepped up to the spot, but his powerful effort was pushed away low down to Harris’ right.

Harris was alert to push a Jones shot on the turn round the post, before Jamie Soule had a goal ruled out for offside down the other end when backheeling in a James Dodd cross. Amthony Ochieng then drove wide of the target from 25 yards.

Humphries smacked a shot against the base of the post from 20 yards following Robbie Willmott’s pass, before Soule could only fire his shot into the stand behind the goal when taking aim inside the box. Harris then pulled off a superb save to deny Jones from close range, pushing away a volley from six yards.

Soule saw a 25-yard volley deflect narrowly over the target for a corner, before Grubb curled a 25-yard free-kick over the target. Harris then denied home substitute Callum Watts from close range, before Cameron James struck the post from halfway when taking aim following a loose clearance outside of his area by Harris.

Soule fired wide of the near post when being put through at an angle, before Harris again pushed away a low James effort as Chelmsford looked for that important goal to kill the game off.

The Seagulls were to level it in injury time when Willmott’s cross was headed up and not out onto Jagger Cane’s foot 18 yards out, his cleanly-struck volley creeping into the net to spark celebrations on the pitch and in the stands.
