Chesham United v Weston-super-Mare

Chesham United 1 - 1 Weston-super-Mare
28 Mar 2023 - 19:45The Meadow

A long-range strike from Lloyd Humphries minutes before the end helped Weston to a 1-1 draw away at Chesham United.

The first half was short of any attempts on goal from either side, with Weston having both the efforts on goal. Sam Avery headed an Elis Watts corner into the hands of Dante Baptiste, before Humphries drove a 30-yard free-kick narrowly wide of the target after Watts had been fouled when cutting inside.

The second half was again a test for both sides looking to play through the opposition’s defence. Jack Connors for the hosts saw an overhit cross sail just over the head of Luke Purnell and drop behind for a goal-kick, while Reuben Reid and Olly Mehew’s running up front earned the Seagulls a couple of corners when they looked to get the cross into the box.

The hosts were to take the lead when Weston initially dealt with a corner, but the cross back in towards the back post was met by Jeanmal Prosper, whose header back across goal dropped into the far corner to the defender’s delight.

The Seagulls looked to get themselves back level and they did so four minutes before the end when Humphries had a corner cleared, but he retrieved the loose ball to cut inside onto his right foot and fire a dipping effort from 25 yards beyond the diving Baptiste to level things.

With both sides now going for the win in a game that was swinging end-to-end, Watts had an opportunity to find the winner when he met a Jason Pope cross at the back post, but he couldn’t sort his feet out in time and his attempt was wide of the near post.
