In a trip to Clevedon Town last night, the Seagulls came away with a 4-2 win thanks to four goals in the first 45 minutes.
It didn’t take long for Weston to take the lead when a Clevedon free-kick was met by the head of Syd Camper, his attempt richocheting off the bar. Luke Purnell caught the ball and quickly released Scott Laird for a counter attack. The in-form full-back immediately found Nick McCootie in behind with a raking pass, who brought it under controll and slotted underneath Harley Wilkinson for 1-0.
Chances were few and far between until the hour mark, but Weston eventually doubled their lead. Laird’s cross was cleared just as Lucas Vowles was ready to strike, but Grubb retrieved the ball on the left side of the box. From 18 yards, he curled a sumptuous effort right into the far corner for 2-0.
A third quickly followed, with Lloyd Humphries getting in on the act. Grubb’s delivery was headed away to Humphries 30 yards from goal, and his effort flew past Wilkinson via a Camper deflection for three.
Weston soon made it four with the last kick of the first half as McCootie got a toe to a bouncing ball in the area, with Archibald Heywood catching the forwards outstretched leg. After the referee pointed to the spot, McCootie stepped up to slam in his effort low to Wilkinson’s right to put Weston four to the good.
In the second half, Clevedon came out with a point to prove and they soon pulled one back. A strike from Morgan Williams 20 yards out struck the leg of Glen Hayer and diverted the ball past Luke Purnell for 1-4.
Clevedon then got another goal a few minutes later when a foul was committed on the edge of the Weston box. Ollie Babington stepped up to the plate, and he curled a free-kick just inside Purnell’s near post for 2-4.
The rest of the half was fairly non-eventful with Laird, Jay Murray, Mike Symons and Ben Griffith all going close to adding to Weston’s lead but the game eventually fizzled out.
