Clevedon Town 1 - 4 Weston-super-Mare
19 Jul 2022 - 19:30The Everyone Active Stadium

Goals from Ben Griffith, Scott Laird, Elis Watts and Dayle Grubb saw Weston to a 4-1 win away to Clevedon Town.

Luca Smith was called into action early on when he pushed away a low Grubb free-kick, Lloyd Humphries firing over from the resulting corner. Jack Holmes headed a Grubb free-kick wide at the back post, before a similar opportunity presented itself two minutes later however the No.6’s header was beaten away by Smith.

Holmes was again involved when Griffith pulled the back back to him on the edge of the area, and the midfielder’s low effort was cleared off the line by Callum Eastwood. Bailey Kempster then came close when attacking a Jay Murray cross at the back post, but he couldn’t stretch enough and diverted his volley wide. Holmes then had another shooting opportunity when turning from a quick Kempster throw, but he drove over the bar from 25 yards.

Weston took the lead a few minutes before half-time when Griffith turned 18 yards out after receiving a Grubb pass, and his shot took a wicked deflection off of Eastwood before looping over Smith to give the visitors the lead.

Alex Camm had the first real opportunity for Clevedon right on the stroke of half-time when he broguht a cross down inside the box, his shot toward the bottom corner striking the base of the post and rolling harmlessly behind for a goal-kick.

Six minutes into the second half, Weston were to take the lead when Laird played a pass into Griffith inside the area. The young striker held the ball up before backheeling it into the path of Laird, who drove in past Smith from six yards to double the side’s advantage.

A third would come shortly before the hour mark when Murray was played in down the right-hand side. His low cross found substitute Watts, who raced onto the cross first-time and sidefooted a perfect attempt past Smith for 3-0.

Clevedon were to get one back with 25 minutes to go when Henry Westlake broke away from the Weston midfield and threaded in striker Freddie King, who drove his attempt across Luke Purnell and into the bottom corner for a consolation.

Weston continued their search for more goals, Grubb’s free-kick striking the crossbar and going behind for a goal-kick. Humphries drove over from 30 yards, while a Grubb volley sailed over the crossbar from 20 yards after a James Dodd cross had dropped to him.

The Seagulls had a chance from the spot when Murray was brought down by Clevedon captain and former Seagulls player Syd Camper, with Alfie Moulden stepping up to the spot. The youngster scuffed his kick though, and Smith could dive low to his left and hold the attempt.

With a minute to go, Watts was brought down by Stan Irving inside the box as he flicked the ball past him. Captain Grubb stepped up from 12 yards this time, and he drove his shot into the top right-hand corner of Smith’s goal for 4-1.
