A late header from Scott Laird saw Weston continue their fine form in pre-season with a 2-1 win at Frome Town.
Frome were the first to find the back of the net in the sweltering heat just past the 10-minute mark when a flowing move saw Jon Davies find Rex Mannings on the edge of the box. With one strike of his left boot, he curled into the bottom corner past Luke Purnell for 1-0.
Jake Jackson had a goal disallowed for offside after being slipped through in the right side of the box, before the visitors equalised moments later.
Jay Murray turned on a pass just inside the Weston half and drove forward, finding Laird on the overlap. The left-back’s cross was low and into the centre where striker Lucas Vowles swivelled away from one defender with his first touch before finding the bottom corner on his left foot, leaving the Robins keeper rooted to the spot.
In the second half, Purnell was forced into action for the first time when he pushed away a shot from Kane Simpson inside the area, with Lloyd Humphries twice going close for Weston. He first had a low effort held by the keeper before a 25-yard strike towards the bottom corner rolled just past the post.
The Seagulls got the win late on when a Nick McCootie cross was blocked by the Frome left-back. Jay Murray went across to take the corner and his outward delivery was met by the head of Laird, who powerfully directed his header into the top corner at the near post.
Frome almost equalised in the dying moments when a Frome player stuck a leg out to meet a cross from the left, but the effort looped onto the crossbar and Weston cleared.
