In the final warm-up clash before the National League South curtain raiser, a Reuben Reid penalty was enough to beat Frome Town 1-0.
Rex Mannings had the game’s first opportunity when he received the ball inside the box and beat his man, before seeing his effort punched away by Frome keeper Kyle Phillips. Jacob Jagger Cane worked an opportunity when wriggling away from two men and playing a one-two with Reid to get through on goal before seeing Phillips turn his low effort round the post. Frome then went close down the other end when a corner found a red shirt rising above the bodies, the header rattling against Harry Lee’s crossbar.
Jagger Cane curled over the bar from outside the area when receiving a pass from Jason Pope following Lloyd Humphries’ excellent cross-field switch, while down the other end a Frome head could only put a right-wing delivery wide of the target. Jagger Cane then had a shot from inside the area deflect behind for a corner following Rex Mannings’ pull-back.
The visitors were to take the lead when a long ball down the left released James Dodd into space. As the midfielder squeezed away from his man, he was sent tumbling once his heels were clipped and Reid was left to step up from the spot. The seasoned striker cooly fired his penalty down the middle to give the Seagulls the lead.
In the second half, Weston came close with a low shot from substitute Jay Murray after he had broke in behind the defence and gone for goal on his left foot, while down the other end Frome had a couple of chances from set-pieces and long-range shots.
Jamie Soule had a chance when getting on the end of a pass in behind and weaving past a couple of recovering defenders in the box before seeing his low shot blocked, and Weston were able to see out the win in the final pre-season game.
