Hayes & Yeading United v Weston super Mare

Hayes & Yeading United 1 - 2 Weston super Mare
17 Aug 2019 - 15:00The SkyEX Community Stadium

Ben Whitehead netted a second-half winner to help the Seagulls on their way to a 1-2 victory at Hayes & Yeading.

Joel Randall was the first to go closest in the game, when he was found by Nick McCootie and as the loanee shifted the ball onto his left foot, his strike from an angle was held by Ravan Constable.

A few minutes later, the Seagulls took the lead. From a Hayes goal-kick, Constable played out to Ismail Yakubu, who was pressured by Whitehead. Yakuba passed back to Constable, and as the keeper went out to pass out to the opposite side of the pitch, Randall stole in and blocked the pass, deflecting the ball into an empty net.

Ogo Obi had a shot blocked by Jake Mawford, while Lyle Della Verde weaved past a few Weston challenges but dragged his shot inches wide of the far post. Della Verde went close again, but curled his shot just wide as he cut in from the right.

After the interval, it didn’t take long for Hayes to equalise when Scott Laird misplaced his pass straight to Della Verde, who slipped through Elliot Benyon. The experienced marksman rounded Luke Purnell and slotted into the net.

However, Weston got their noses back in front when Laird’s pass forward seemed as if the Hayes defence could simply clear it. However, they made a hash of it, allowing Whitehead to steal in, and with him baring down on goal, he fired past Constable into the top corner.

Hayes determinedly came back when they had two attempts cleared off the line in quick succession, and Obi curled a shot off the post with the rebound being fired over the bar from close range by Benyon.

Hayes continued to come at Weston, but the Seagulls held firm and held out for their first three points of the season.
