Merthyr Town v Weston super Mare

Merthyr Town 1 - 1 Weston super Mare
13 Aug 2019 - 19:45Penydarren Park

A penalty from Scott Laird saw the Seagulls equalise in the 96th minute against Merthyr Town on their first away trip of the league season.

Merthyr went close in the opening minute, striker Ian Traylor cutting onto his left foot outside the area but curling over. Sam Hendy dragged his shot wide from the edge of the box down the other end, and Ben Whitehead curled his shot into Alex Harris’ hands after turning his marker.

Whitehead latched onto a poor backpass to Harris, but the forward hit the outside of the post after trying to round the goalkeeper, and Nick McCootie fired over from 25 yards after being given the room to shoot minutes later. Former Seagull Ben Swallow headed over the crossbar after a cross found him at the back post.

Just before half-time, Merthyr’s Jamie Veale jinked away from Alex Byrne but dragged his effort wide from 25 yards.

After the interval, Harris tipped a shot from Isaac Pearce aside after being found by substitute Jarrad Welch, while Welch saw his own drilled effort from 18 yards blocked following some linkup play between McCootie and Pearce.

Merthyr broke the deadlock just moments after that chance, when an attack from Merthyr got in behind Seagulls skipper Greg Tindle and leaving Traylor in on goal. The striker stayed composed, and drove his low effort in at Luke Purnell’s far post for 1-0.

Purnell was out to save an Owain Jones one-on-one with his feet after the No.9 had been played through, and a minute later Pearce had his curling effort tipped over for a corner. From the resulting corner, a bouncing ball fell to Welch on the edge of the box, and his header was tipped over for another corner by Harris.

As the clock ticked into added time and time was running out for the Seagulls, they earned that decisive chance to equalised. A set piece fell to Greg Tindle in the box, and his arrowing effort was deemed to have been blocked by the hands of Merthyr captain Ashley Evans. Stepping up with nerves of steel was Laird, who sent Harris the wrong way and converted his penalty to send the travelling contingent home happy with the last kick of the game.
