Slimbridge AFC v Weston super Mare

Slimbridge AFC 1 - 2 Weston super Mare
24 Aug 2020 - 19:45Wisloe Road

Teenager Bailey Kempster netted a late winner in a 2-1 victory when Westom visited Slimbridge last night.

Reese Jacobs had the first meaningful effort of the night but fired wide of goal before Ben Deakin was forced to head an inswinging corner from youngster Ryan Jones off the line. Lloyd Humphries then had the first effort on target for Weston but his long-range effort was straight into the arms of Lewis Adams.

Weston took the lead when striker Mike Symons laid the ball back to Matt Jones who had a go at goal. His effort appeared to be heading wide, before it took a deflection off Deakin and hit the back of the net for 1-0.

After the interval, Jacobs had an effort fly over the bar which failed to trouble Luke Purnell before he had another attempt, this time heading wide Danny King’s corner at the near post. Sam Hendy then came close to doubling Weston’s lead as he raced onto a poor Adams clearance, but his shot was well kept out by the Slimbridge keeper after advancing into the box.

King then netted an equaliser for Slimbridge, cutting inside and beating two men before curling an excellent shot into the far corner past Purnell.

Substitute Keiran Thomas had a shot saved by Adams as the visitors seeked a late winner, which came through one of their teenage talents.

A defensive mistake was picked up by Kempster, leaving him one-on-one. He had the composure to round Adams in the Slimbridge net before slotting in to make it 2-1 with just a few minutes remaining in the game.
