Slough Town v Weston-super-Mare AFC

Slough Town 2 - 0 Weston-super-Mare AFC
03 Feb 2024 - 15:00Arbour Park

Weston fell to their first away league defeat of 2024 following a 2-0 defeat at Slough Town.

Manager Scott Bartlett selected the same eleven that started in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Chelmsford City, as The Seagulls looked to continue their recent good form.

It was a quiet opening to the game, but eventually it was The Rebels who were the first side to seriously threaten, when a corner from the right was headed into the side netting by Jeanmal Prosper.

In the next opportunity of note, it was another defender who went close to breaking the deadlock. Robbie Willmott’s cross was headed goalwards by Keiran Thomas, but his effort crashed against the crossbar before being cleared.

Moments later, the woodwork was hit again. This time, it was The Seagulls who were spared as Nathan Minhas’ close-range effort hit the post.

Weston weren’t so lucky as The Rebels took the lead not long after. A wayward pass in midfield was latched on to by a Slough attacker, who threaded the ball through to Matt Lench. He dinked the ball past Max Harris from around 15 yards with a left-footed finish. The ball hit the inside of the post before agonisingly trickling over the line.

At the interval, Weston made three substitutions as Bailey Kempster, Alex Fletcher and Rex Mannings were all introduced to the action as Jordan Bastin, Thomas and Jamie Soule were replaced.

However, the half started badly for Weston as Slough doubled their lead. A wicked set-piece delivery from the left was glanced in by the head of Prosper, who wasn’t to be denied this time.

Eventually, Weston created a chance for themselves to reduce the arrears, with the half-time subs being involved. Mannings broke free from the Slough back-line, he aimed a shot towards the Slough goal that was deflected into the path of Fletcher, whose left-footed effort was held by the Slough goalkeeper, Dan Lincoln.

Kempster, also making a good impact from the bench, then floated in a cross to the back post that Fletcher got on the end of, but his volley was cleared for a corner.

Dayle Grubb found some space on the edge of the area, and the former Forest Green man got a shot on target, but it was held by Lincoln.

With Weston attacking, they became vulnerable when a clearance from a Slough defender was nodded on on the halfway line, the ball finding Johnny Goddard in acres of space. He ran through on goal and was one-on-one with Harris, but the on-loan Cheltenham stopper made a smart save to deny The Rebels a third.

Mannings and Lloyd Humphries had attempts on goal that both whistled just wide but, overall, it was a deserved win for Scott Davies’ side, who are now 16 league games unbeaten at their Arbour Park home.
