Taunton Town v Weston-super-Mare AFC

Taunton Town 0 - 1 Weston-super-Mare AFC
18 Apr 2024 - 19:45Wordsworth Drive

Weston ran out 1-0 winners courtesy of a late Marlon Jackson goal that saw the hosts relegated.

With the home side needing a win to keep their survival hopes alive, it was clear they were going to go all out for 3 points.

Weston started slightly livelier with some good early possession and James Dodd forcing an excellent save from Lloyd Irish but then Taunton grew into the game and looked more likely to open the scoring.

Ross Stearn was the focal point of the attacks but his efforts were either off target or comfortably collected by Max Harris.

Harris was called into action near the end of the first period and pulled off an excellent save to tip a Ball shot just over the crossbar to keep it level at the break.

Harris was once again on hand to keep the game goalless when he produced an excellent double save, the first of which with an outstretched leg.

It was then Weston’s turn to close, Marlon Jackson broke past the back line and found himself on the right hand corner of the 6 yard box but fired his effort just over the bar.

Weston then got on the front foot and were searching for the winning goal with Jackson, Dodd and Sam Avery all having half chances at the goal of Irish.

The winning goal did indeed come on the 84th minute when Robbie Wilmott played a delicately chipped ball through to Jackson who got one-on-one with Irish and perfectly chipped his effort over the keeper to make it 1-0.

The Seagulls defended resolutely for the remainder of the game consigning Taunton to relegation back to the Southern League and giving themselves a fighting chance of finishing in the top half of the league table.
