Goals from Scott Laird and Jordan Bastin against their former club saw the Seagulls come away from Tiverton Town with a 2-0 win on Boxing Day.
Tiverton had the first opportunity when a long kick forward by Lewis Williams was headed down by former Seagull Lucas Vowles to Niall Thompson 18 yards out, whose powerful first-time effort was tipped round the post by Max Harris. Dayle Grubb had the first chance for Weston when he looked to get in down the left side of the box, but his shot toward the near post flashed wide of the target in the visitors’ first attack. Matt Britton then headed wide a Dylan Jones corner down the other end.
Thompson had a shot trickle into the arms of Harris after beating his man down the wing, before Vowles had a shot from 18 yards held by Harris following a powerful run forward after winning the ball inside the Weston half.
Weston had an opportunity to make it 1-0 from the penalty spot when James Dodd escaped attention from his marker inside the area, however was brought down from behind by Jack Fanning. Referee Carl Peters pointed to the spot, and skipper Grubb stepped up but uncharacteristically fired his shot from 12 yards over the bar.
Bastin had an opportunity after being slid in by Dodd, but his shot inside the area was pushed wide by the feet of Williams.
The Seagulls were to break the deadlock minutes before half-time when second phase from a corner, Bastin worked a yard of space inside the area and his low shot across the goal lacked the subsequent power yet on hand was Laird to prod home from a few yards out despite some Tiverton protests in the buildup.
In the second half, Josh Jones’ flick from a corner was over Harris’ bar, before Reuben Reid’s shot on the turn from 18 yards was straight into the grateful arms of Williams. Grubb had a free-kick from 20 yards strike the wall not long before the end, Dodd firing the rebound over the target.
A second was to put the game to bed inside the final 10 minutes though when Jagger Cane found Bastin on the right-hand side. The winger cut inside and patiently waited for his opening, sitting down a couple of defenders before arrowing an effort into the bottom corner to score at the ground he called home for a couple of years.
The final action of the game was to come through Tiverton when Harris’ fingertip save denied Louis Morrison, but Weston held out for the win as they extended their lead at the top of the Southern League Premier South to three points ahead of Truro City.
