Tonbridge Angels v Weston-super-Mare AFC

Tonbridge Angels 0 - 1 Weston-super-Mare AFC
12 Aug 2023 - 15:00The Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium

A Jordan Bastin strike midway inside the first half saw Weston come away from Tonbridge Angels with a 1-0 win.

Reuben Reid had the game’s first shot when he drove at the defence and fired wide of Jonathan Henly’s near post. Jacob Jagger Cane then had a chance from 18 yards, but his volley was caught by Henly following Bastin’s knock-down to him, while Tommie Fagg headed a Lewis Gard free-kick over the bar down the other end when Harry Lee failed to punch clear.

The Seagulls were to take the lead when a long pass forward by Lloyd Humphries spun through in behind for Bastin and with the ball sitting up kindly for him 18 yards out, he volleyed in past Henly first-time to break the deadlock.

Ruben Soares-Junior had a curling effort from a corner headed off the line by Jagger Cane for another set-piece, with Fagg heading Scott Wagstaff’s driven delivery wide. Gard then fired over the bar from the edge of the area when cutting inside onto his left, before Jason Pope and Lloyd Humphries both had efforts held by the keeper from long range in the final minutes of the half.

Humphries fired a 20-yard free-kick over the bar from 20 yards in the first action of the second period, while down the other end Jamie Fielding nodded a Gard free-kick back across goal and past the far post before Soares-Junior volleyed wide from 20 yards when a loose ball dropped in his direction on the right wing.

Soares-Junior had a chance from inside the area when a Joe Turner clipped cross from the by-line dropped his way, but his half-volley was deflected behind by Sam Avery. The centre-back was again proving to be a collasus at the back, and proved vital again when Stefan Payne was played in behind. His one-on-one struck the post, the ball falling straight back toward him. He took a touch to set himself, but Avery was back on the line to hammer the driven rebound away for a corner.

Weston came close when Jagger Cane lead a counter-attack and found James Morton, who spotted Thomas steaming forward down the right. He couldn’t get a shot away but fed the ball into Jagger Cane haring into the box, whose low attempt was palmed wide by Henly. From substitute Dayle Grubb’s set-piece, Jackson headed the delivery wide.

In added-on time towards the end of the half, the Seagulls were made to dig deep by their hosts as Tonbridge threw everything they had at Scott Bartlett’s men, but marshalled by Humphries and Avery, the Seagulls defended with heart, desire and passion to make it two wins from two.
