Welling United v Weston-super-Mare AFC

Welling United 3 - 1 Weston-super-Mare AFC
16 Mar 2024 - 15:00Park View Road

Despite an excellent away performance, Weston were beaten 3-1 by Welling United after two goals at the death from the hosts.

Weston started the game with a fast paced attacking intent and held possession well. Chances were slim but Weston appeared to be in control.

Weston’s best chance of the half fell to Dayle Grubb who had the ball squared across to him by James Dodd leaving him with an open goal but Charles-Cook in goal managed to scramble across and block the shot.

Against the run of play Welling managed to dispossess Sam Avery around the half way line and countered with pace. Sonny Fish found himself with enough space to unleash an effort that had to much power for Max Harris giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break.

Half Time: Welling United 1-0 Weston-super-Mare AFC

Weston started the second half with the same intensity that was shown in the first half. Controlling possession just waiting for an opening to present itself, an equaliser felt inevitable.

After chances falling the way of Reuben Reid and Robbie Wilmott that both went just wide it was James Dodd who secured the equaliser for the Seagulls.

The ball came down the left hand side before falling to Dodd who was perfectly positioned 10 yards out. His effort was pin-point to the top right corner giving Weston a fully deserved equaliser.

If anyone was looking likely to go on and win the game it looked like the Seagulls. However with time quickly running out it seemed a draw was the most likely result.

3 added minutes were indicated and just 1 minute into that disaster struck for the Seagulls. Papadopolous found enough space to squeeze the ball past Harris at his near post giving Welling the lead.

Just 90 seconds later Welling added to the heartbreak for Weston as Amoo worked his way into the box before an excellent finish killed Weston’s hope and made it 3-1.
