Weston-super-Mare AFC v Aveley

Weston-super-Mare AFC 1 - 2 Aveley
13 Apr 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

The Millers managed to beat Weston 2-1 with a late penalty, as the visitors’ continued their push for the play-offs.

Sam Avery headed wide inside the first minute, directing a Robbie Willmott corner past the target. Reuben Reid then went close not long after, working a yard of space inside the area before seeing his shot kept out by Jonathan North. First-half substitute Marlon Jackson then directed a Raphael Araoye cross over from six yards, after the striker had replaced Reid in the 13th minute.

Kehinde Aligru fired wide across goal from 18 yards, before Callum Wood flung into action to head away a curling Ryan Carr shot off the line after Max Harris had been beaten.

From the resulting corner, the visitors took the lead when the corner found Aveley skipper Harry Gibbs at the back post, his downward header beating Harris and finding the corner of the net for 1-0.

Razzaq De-Graft saw the shot from 25 yards held low down by Harris, before Eduino Vaz flicked over a low Carr delivery from six yards.

The Seagulls were to level when a long ball from Wood found Jackson in behind, who worked the shot onto his right foot inside the area. North kept the shot out but running onto the rebound was Bailey Kempster, driving in through a crowd of bodies into the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign.

An Aveley defender stuck a foot out to prevent a James Dodd backheel from Jordan Bastin’s cross finding the back of the net, before Avey sliced a volley off target following pinball in the area. Charlee Hughes’ low shot from 25 yards after being gifted the ball was collected comfortably by Harris.

In the second period, Willmott drove into the side-netting following an excellent run forward by Kempster before Arnaut Krasniqi drove over the target from 25 yards after De-Graftd drove through the heart of the Weston midfield. Bastin then fired over from the edge of the area after a mazy run forward, before Carr fired narrowly wide from 25 yards.

The visitors were to get the decisive goal when Carr received the ball in the area and worked a yard of space, eventually being fouled from behind by a Weston player. Odelusi stepped up to the spot, and calmly sent Harris the wrong way with a powerful penalty.

Jackson came close to equalising when he attacked Kempster’s cross, but the ball skimmed off his forehead and behind for a goal-kick. Lloyd Humphries had the final chance when he met a Dodd pass 18 yards out, but sliced the attempt wide.
