Weston-super-Mare AFC v Bath City

Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 - 1 Bath City
23 Jan 2024 - 19:45The Optima Stadium

A Cody Cooke finish five minutes into the second half saw Bath City defeat the Seagulls 1-0 at The Optima Stadium.

Dan Hayfield had the first chance of the game when attacking Ewan Clark’s corner at the front post, but his glancing header flashed across goal and past the far post. Reuben Reid had Weston’s first chance when the ball fell to him 25 yards out, but he dragged his 25-yard shot wide of the post. Reid then got another chance when turning on the edge of the area, but his low shot was held by Jose Casa Grande in between the Bath sticks.

Lloyd Humphries then saw a curling shot from a short Jordan Bastin corner caught by Casa Grande, before Bath captain Kieran Parselle made a good block inside the Bath area to block a low Reid strike when being picked out following a good Seagulls move. A looping Cody Cooke header from Joe Raynes’ cross was then caught by Max Harris in the Weston net.

Weston’s Thomas had the final chance of the first half when bringing down a low corner delivery by Bastin, his spin and shot narrowly wide of the post.

The first chance of the second half fell to Bath’s Scott Wilson, the former Seagull firing over from 20 yards after receiving a lay-off from Cooke.

The game’s only goal was to come the way of the visitors five minutes into the second period when a great bit of skill from Clark down the Bath right saw him work a yard of space, his bouncing cross into the centre hooked in first-time by the foot of Cooke 12 yards out to send the visiting supporters into delirium.

As Weston looked to hit back, a low Bastin shot across goal narrowly evaded the far post before Bath’s Thomas saw a cross-shot gathered by Harris as Bath bodies closed in on the loose ball. Sam Avery then came inches away from reaching a Lloyd Humphries corner, but he couldn’t quite grow enough to nod the ball inside the far post.

Humphries fired a 35-yard free-kick over the bar, before Bath just about managed to scramble a low Raphael Araoye cross away from their goal with Weston players lurking. Substitute Jamie Soule then turned inside the area and fired wide of goal as the Seagulls looked for that equaliser that was just evading them.

In Bath’s last chance of the game, Cooke volleyed a Jordan Thomas cross wide at the back post when being picked out by the tricky left winger. Weston continued to come forward, but failed to find the goal they needed to get a point.
