Weston-super-Mare AFC v Braintree Town

Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 - 1 Braintree Town
06 Apr 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

In a low-key affair at the Optima Stadium, it was play-off chasing Braintree who came out on top by just the one goal.

Weston started strongly in the first half and kept the ball well with extreme patience. While chances were few and far between it was certainly the hosts who enjoyed more of the ball.

Braintree were value for money on the counter attack and could easily have seen themselves at least a goal up at half time.

Weston we’re trying to carve out chances and both Kempster and Mannings both had crosses that evaded everybody. Grubb also had an effort that didn’t trouble Sims in the Braintree goal. However, neither side could argue with the scoreline at half-time.

HT: Weston-super-Mare AFC 0-0 Braintree Town

The second half continued in a much similar fashion to the first half with Weston working hard to try and find a goal but Braintree continued to defend exceptionally well.

Humphries and Dodd looked the most threatening in and around the Braintree goal with both having an effort saved and both sending one over the bar.

Grubb and Reid were the next two to have efforts flashed either wide or over despite some excellent build up play around the away side’s box.

As the half went on Braintree took control and if it wasn’t for Max Harris making a wonder save preventing a certain goal from 5 yards the away side would have taken the lead.

The lead did come on 70 minutes through a smart finish from Tom Blackwell at the back post to send the travelling support into celebration.

Despite pressure from the hosts for the last 20 minutes the stern resistance of the Essex’s side defence held firm for a 1-0 away victory.
