Weston-super-Mare AFC v Chippenham Town

Weston-super-Mare AFC 2 - 1 Chippenham Town
09 Apr 2024 - 19:45The Optima Stadium

Reuben Reid slammed in a 90th-minute penalty for Weston to secure a 2-1 win over Chippenham Town at The Optima Stadium.

Luke Spokes had an early shot blocked before Weston broke away down the other end through Bailey Kempster, his low cross cleared to James Dodd 18 yards out who fired wide of the target. Tom Owen-Evans fired over the bar from inside the area, before Max Harris was called into action to hold a skidding Luke Haines shot from 25 yards.

Robbie Willmott curled a 25-yard free-kick wide of the target, before a set-piece delivery from Weston’s No.7 was headed wide by the diving Keiran Thomas.

The visitors were to take the lead when Alex Bray’s ball into the box was headed away but with a strong wind sweeping across the pitch, Weston’s attempts to clear landed at the feet of Will King, who failed to get clean contact on the shot. His attempt rolled to Owen-Evans, who swept in past Harris from inside the area for 1-0.

Weston had a chance to go level when Willmott’s free-kick fell to the feet of Humphries inside the area, his shot on the turn kept out by the feet of Will Henry before Reid’s rebound was held by the Chippenham keeper. Craig Fasanmade then volleyed a deflected Bray cross wide down the other end, while Henry was called into action to punch away a swerving 25-yard free-kick by Humphries.

The Seagulls were to level moments before half-time when Willmott’s inswinging corner got caught in the wind, the ball floating over the line at the near post. Chippenham scrambled away as Weston players and fans alike appealed for a goal, the referee eventually deeming it had crossed the line after speaking to his assistant.

In the second half, Fasanmade’s deflected attempt from 25 yards was comfortable enough for Harris, before Humphries’ 25-yard shot deflected behind for a goal-kick off of Reid. Jordan Bastin then had a header from inside the area blocked by a Chippenham body after he attacked a cross from fellow full-back Thomas.

Callum Wood drove a low attempt wide of the far post from 25 yards, before the Bristol City loanee glanced a Willmott free-kick wide from inside the area. Kempster then drove wide of the near post after driving into the area when being set clear by Dodd.

Willmott then saw a shot from inside the area blocked by a Chippenham body after delaying his attempt, before Dodd flicked wide a Willmott corner at the front post. Harris and Weston’s defence were then called into action when Chippenham took aim at goal with four attempts from inside the area, Max making a smart double-save before substitute Sam Avery and Jacob Jagger Cane threw themselves in the way of attempts.

There was to be one final chance for Weston, when Willmott flicked a pass to Humphries down the right. Captain of the day Lloyd backheeled a smart pass into the path of Thomas making a burst into the area, who was tripped by a Chippenham player as he looked to reach the ball first. With a penalty awarded, Reid kept his cool to smash his spot-kick into the side-netting and past Henry for 2-1.

Harris made one final save six minutes into stoppage time when Bluebirds substitute Ed Williams broke down the right and into the box, his shot from an angle tipped behind by Weston’s No.1.
