Weston-super-Mare AFC 2 - 2 Dartford
06 Jan 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

A Reuben Reid strike from 18 yards inside the dying embers of the game saw Weston draw 2-2 at home to Dartford.

Weston came close early on when a Reuben Reid strike from 18 yards took a major deflection, the effort bambooziling Ryan Sandford in the Dartford goal yet the strike hitting the inside of the post and the Dartford keeper could recover enough to claw away. James Dodd fired over from the edge of the area following Dayle Grubb’s layoff, before Jamie Soule had an oppportunity from a tight angle yet his shot was kept out by the feet of Sandford.

The Darts were to take the lead when Luke Coulson’s delivery was headed away and back to him, his pass inside finding Matty Macarthur whose drive from 25 yards took a deflection and deceived Max Harris, hitting the back of the net for 1-0.

Macarthur then had a shot from 18 yards go straight at Harris on his left foot, before the Darts winger struck the base of the net when stretching to reach a loose ball inside the area following a free-kick dropping his way. Jordan Bastin then headed wide at the near post from a Robbie Willmott cross following a short corner.

Jacob Jagger Cane had the first chance of the second half when latching onto a Keiran Thomas cross, but his side-footed volley was held by Sandford.

The Seagulls were to draw level when Thomas found Grubb inside, who squared up his man before shifting it onto his left foot and fired a low attempt past Sandford for the first Weston goal at The Optima in 2024.

Weston went close when a ball squirmed loose to Reid inside the area, but his effort flew narrowly wide of the near post.

The Darts were to retake the lead when a Sandford goal-kick was glanced through to substitute Alex Wall, who found space inside the area and slotted through the legs of Harris for 2-1.

As Weston looked to get back level, Soule fired over the bar from inside the area before substitute Rex Mannings drove over the bar from 25 yards following a one-two with Reid. A skidding Lloyd Humphries drive from a similar distance was held by Sandford.

The Seagulls were to get a leveller inside the final minute of added-on time when Grubb’s strike inside the area was headed out as far as Bastin, who worked the ball to Reid on his outside. The striker took range and saw his effort take a wicked deflection and find the back of the net for 2-2.
