09 Mar 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

A late winner from James Dodd saw the Seagulls take all three points against Dover Athletic in a 1-0 victory.

A Luke Baptiste strike from 18 yards was the first action of the game, his effort from 18 yards striking a team-mate and bouncing behind for a goal-kick. Reuben Reid had Weston’s first attempt, his strike from 25 yards clearing the bar. Raphael Araoye then glanced a Dayle Grubb free-kick past the far post.

Reid saw a shot from inside the area deflect wide of Daniel Jinadu’s near post, before Callum Wood saw his strike from 25 yards deflect behind for a corner. Bailey Kempster, on his first league start for the Seagulls, then curled over the target from 18 yards following a short corner routine.

Grubb then fired wide of the target off balance from 18 yards following a one-two with Dodd, before the Seagulls No.8 sliced a shot wide from a similar distance following a one-two with Reid. Wood then saw a header from Robbie Willmott’s corner held by Jinadu.

Dodd fired over the target from inside the area following Sam Avery’s pull-back at the end of a flowing Weston move, before Araoye’s low effort from inside the area after a quick Willmott free-kick was kept out by the Dover shot-stopper.

Dodd then flicked a Araoye cross over the target with his head, before Jinadu was in the right place to hold long-range effort from Grubb and Kempster.

Dontai Stewart saw a bending effort towards the far corner from 25 yards curl past the target after bringing down a long ball. Kempster then saw a low effort from inside the area held by Jinadu after cutting onto his left foot, before Grubb fired wide of the near post on his left foot.

Grubb came the closest yet to breaking the deadlock when his free-kick from 18 yards struck the base of the post, before George Wilkinson fired over from 12 yards after good work down the right-hand side by Stewart. Dodd then saw a curling attempt on his right foot from inside the area at an angle held by Jinadu.

Charlie Naylor fired a shot wide from Scott Holding’s cross after he had kept a free-kick alive at the back post, before Jinadu dove into action to keep out long-range attempts from Avery and Humphries. Dylan Pepe then blazed a free-kick over from 20 yards.

The Seagulls were to finally break the deadlock when a quick throw from Willmott saw Dodd out on the wing. Managing to get the better of his man, he turned into the box and curled an effort across goal into the far corner.
