Weston-super-Mare AFC v St Albans City

Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 - 2 St Albans City
12 Mar 2024 - 19:45The Optima Stadium

Two strikes from Shaun Jeffers saw visitors St Albans City defeat Weston 2-0 at The Optima.

Marlon Jackson had the game’s first shot inside the area following a smart layoff from Omar Taylor-Clarke, before Jake Burger fired over the bar from the edge of the area down the other end. Jamie Soule flashed a shot across goal and wide as well when racing onto a clipped Lloyd Humphries pass.

St Albans had a goal disallowed for offside when Shaun Jeffers dispatched Sam Brown’s cross, before Soule fired over under pressure from a Rex Mannings cross. Robbie Willmott then had a 25-yard free-kick deflect off the wall and behind for a corner.

Taylor-Clarke had a 25-yard shot gathered by Michael Johnson, before Kyran Wiltshire fired over from 18 yards following Zane Banton’s knockdown at the back post following a looping cross.

The visitors were to take the lead when Banton got the better of Raphael Araoye inside the area and was pulled down by the defender. Striker Shaun Jeffers stepped up to the spot, and calmly sent Max Harris the wrong way to make it 1-0.

Gio Rasulo fired over at the second attempt from 25 yards after his initial free-kick had been blocked by the Weston wall, with Soule then lifting a shot over the bar down the other end from Mannings’ pull-back. Burger then had the final effort of the half with a shot narrowly across goal for the visitors.

In the second half, Burger was at the heart of everything for the visitors, first having a shot saved by Harris after being slipped through and then setting through Jeffers who had a low attempt kept out by the body of Harris. He then saw an 18-yard attempt held by Harris at his near post.

James Dodd then lashed a 25-yard volley at Johnson after a ball had been cleared in his direction, before Jason Pope saw a low 18-yard shot held by the visiting stopper. Banton then saw a low shot from 25 yards held by Harris. Substitute Bailey Kempster then saw a low shot from just inside the area held by Johnson as the game ticked into the final minutes.

Despite Weston throwing everything at it in the dying moments, the result was capped off by the visitors with Jeffers seeing a deflected shot from 18 yards beat Harris and land in the top corner seven minutes into added time.
