Weston-super-Mare AFC v Taunton Town

Weston-super-Mare AFC 4 - 0 Taunton Town
29 Mar 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

Goals from Bailey Kempster, Reuben Reid, Jordan Bastin and Keiran Thomas saw Weston defeat Somerset rivals Taunton Town 4-0 at The Optima.

Kempster got an early opportunity to run down the Weston left, his clipped cross just ahead of the arriving Robbie Willmott. Down the other end, Ollie Chamberlain dragged a shot wide from 25 yards following a Ross Stearn knock-down.

Weston were to break the deadlock when Reid slipped a pass in behind for Kempster, who squared up his man inside the area to work a yard of space before dinking a shot over former Seagull keeper Lloyd Irish into the far corner for his first league goal.

Keiran Thomas fired wide from 25 yards when being given the opportunity to shoot, before Taunton debutant Ben Acey had a 25-yard shot smothered by Max Harris in the Weston net.

The Seagulls were to make it two when after a spell of patient buildup play, James Dodd fed a pass in behind Taunton’s high line for Reid, who could bare down on goal one-on-one with Irish and slot a shot past the Taunton shot-stopper for 2-0.

Harris held a Nat Jarvis flick from an Acey cross, before Thomas headed Dayle Grubb’s free-kick over the bar from 12 yards.

The first action of the second half saw Chamberlain drag a shot wide from 25 yards after turning from James’ pass, before Grubb had an effort from inside the area blocked by Dan Ball on the line following Willmott’s pull-back. Reid then had a shot from 18 yards parried behind by Irish.

Willmott saw a shot from 18 yards blocked before his rebound on the volley was claimed by Irish, and down the other end Zac Bell curled a shot wide from 18 yards when cutting onto his right foot.

The Seagulls were to make it three when Dodd found Bastin on the left wing. Cutting onto his right foot 18 yards out, his deceptive effort on the outside of his left boot curled into the top corner beyond Irish.

A fourth was to follow when Thomas was allowed to bring the ball over halfway from a Humphries pass and got a shot off from 30 yards, his attempt arrowing past Irish into the far corner.

Late on in the game, Harris was forced into saves from Stearn and Chamberlain, but the Seagulls were to claim all three points in an excellent performance.
