Weston-super-Mare AFC v Tonbridge Angels

Weston-super-Mare AFC 3 - 1 Tonbridge Angels
27 Jan 2024 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

A Robbie Willmott brace and Lloyd Humphries stunner saw the Seagulls beat Tonbridge Angels 3-1 at The Optima.

Weston had the first chance when Raphael Araoye’s header at the back post from a Willmott corner was held by Jonathan Henly, before a low strike by Lewis Gard from 18 yards down the end was kept out by Max Harris.

The Seagulls broke the deadlock when returning captain Dayle Grubb intercepted a pass midway inside the Tonbridge half and drove forward. With a man over in Willmott, his pass found the winger who calmly dispatched a finish across Henly and into the bottom corner for 1-0.

Scott Wagstaff then saw a long-range effort gathered by Harris as the ball bounced awkwardly in front of him, before Harris gathered a low Harry Hinds effort at his front post after the visiting player cut inside from the right. Reuben Reid then saw a shot deflected behind for a corner from Willmott’s pull-back as Weston looked to assert their dominance on the game. Sam Avery then saw a tame volley from six yards dealt with by the Tonbridge defence from a Reid knock-down following Willmott’s corner.

The visitors were to level when Liam Vincent drove down the left and his low cross in from the wing was touched in by Nathan Odokouyero from six yards out amongst a scramble of bodies in the box.

Sean Shields then had the final chance of the half when he fired over from 25 yards when taking aim at the Weston goal.

The Seagulls were to take the lead five minutes into the second half when Reid drove down the left and squared a pass across for Humphries on the edge of the area, his powerful first-time effort ripping the back of the net for his fourth of the campaign.

A third was to quickly follow when Willmott and Reid played a one-two down the right, the latter playing an exquisite reverse ball to release the former, who was allowed to drive into the box and fire his shot across Henly into the bottom corner for his second of the game.

Harris was then called into an excellent stop to deny Tonbridge substitute Jordan Greenidge, tipping a strike from 25 yards onto the post with his fingertips before Avery could clear the danger.
