Weston-super-Mare AFC v Worthing

Weston-super-Mare AFC 4 - 0 Worthing
05 Dec 2023 - 19:45The Optima Stadium

A clinical performance by the Seagulls saw them run out 4-0 winners against visitors Worthing on Tuesday night.

Worthing striker Ollie Pearce had a shot blocked by a couple of Weston defenders inside the area when being found by visiting skipper Joel Colbran, before a Ricky Aguiar free-kick from 30 yards was wonderfully tipped onto the bar by Max Harris. Danny Cashman then had a go from halfway for the visitors looking to catch out Harris, but the attempt floated over the bar.

Pearce then clipped a shot wide of Harris’ near post when being found in behind by Colbran, before Robbie Willmott had Weston’s first attempt when firing over the bar from 25 yards. Alex Fletcher then went close when cutting inside from the right after receiving the ball from James Morton, nutmegging a defender before beating another and firing a left-footed drive wide from 25 yards just past the far post.

In the first action of the half, Weston were to break the deadlock when they won the ball on the right through Grubb and worked it out to Willmott on the left through a couple of passes. The winger swung a delightful cross in for half-time substitute James Dodd, and he glanced a wonderful header inside the far post.

Worthing looked for an equaliser as Pearce had an effort from 25 yards held by Harris in the Weston net, before Colbran curled a shot wide from a similar distance. Grubb then fired wide on his left foot down the other end from inside the area when a counter involving Reid, Willmott and Morton found it’s way to him. The skipper then fired a shot from 25 yards into Rees’ arms.

Grubb was to get his goal though when a neat attack led to Dodd trying to find Willmott with a cross at the near post, the winger being fouled as he stretched to reach the ball. Referee Craig Scriven pointed to the spot, and the No.10 stepped up to the plate, the spot-kick nestling in the roof of the net for his fourth of the season.

Bastin fired wide from 25 yards when intercepting a loose pass just inside the Worthing half, before Grubb slashed wide on his left foot from the edge of the area when Willmott led a counter-attack following Reid’s excellent pass in behind. Morton then had a shot from halfway tipped wide by the scrambling Rees after Bastin put in an excellent 50-50 challenge to break up the visitors’ attack.

Weston made it three when Bastin and Grubb played a one-two down the left, the full-back driving inside into the space. Playing another one-two, this time with Dodd and with no other options, he checked onto his left 18 yards out and fired a low shot past Rees into the corner of the net.

The Seagulls put the icing on the cake when Reid was gifted the ball six yards out from goal, and he was given the simple task of firing past a diving Rees from point-blank range.
