In front of a bumper crowd, a spirited Weston performance wasn’t enough as they lost 3-2 to Yeovil Town at The Optima.
Frank Nouble had the game’s first chance when Jordan Young won the ball on the edge of the Weston area and with the loose ball rolling his way, Nouble drove just wide of Luke Purnell’s near post. Down the other end, Dayle Grubb saw a shot from outside the area go straight at Joe Day before Luke Purnell was called into action when getting down low to keep out a Morgan Williams effort following Jordan Young’s set-piece.
The away side were to take the lead when Lloyd Humphries was penalised for bringing down Rhys Murphy on the edge of the D. Young stepped up to the plate, and he curled an unstoppable left-footed free-kick in off the post and into the net past Purnell for the night’s first goal.
A second was to follow less than a minute later when Weston conceded a corner from Matthew Worthington’s low shot, deflected behind for a corner. Young delivered an outswinging ball into the box for Jamie Sendles-White, who had escaped his marker, to nod a downward header into the back of the net from six yards.
Weston were to keep going for goal however, James Morton seeing a shot from 25 yards gathered by Day before Humphries had an effort from 18 yards deflect over for a corner following Grubb’s short set-piece. Humphries then had a chance at the back post when he met Keiran Thomas’ second attempt at a cross, but he couldn’t direct his header on target.
Thomas had a low shot pushed away by Day after being found on the right-hand side when charging forward to join an attack, before Reuben Reid had a deflected shot from just inside the area kicked away by the feet of Day.
The Seagulls were to get one back when some neat build-up play found Thomas on the right, whose low cross was knocked away by the foot of Jake Wannell. The ball rolled out to Morton 25 yards out, whose first-time shot deflected off of Williams and flew into Day’s top corner in front of the Weston supporters.
In the second half, Pope had the first shot when he brought the ball down from a throw-in and slashed a shot wide from 25 yards.
The Glovers were to restore their two-goal advantage though when Westom gave away a free-kick on Yeovil’s left-hand side. Young delivered a looping ball into the back post where Yeovil captain Josh Staunton climbed above his man to head back across goal, and Nouble was well placed to head beyond Purnell for 3-1.
Grubb had a 25-yard free-kick ripple the side-netting as Weston looked for a route back into the game, before Pope curled over on his right from the edge of the area when given an opportunity to shoot. James Dodd then went close when connecting with a Morton corner, but his volley was scrambled off of the line.
Humphries fired wide from 25 yards when picking up the loose ball following a Grubb corner, before Dodd fired over from 18 yards when being found by the Seagulls skipper.
Weston were to pull another one back seven minutes into injury time when Grubb’s free-kick found substitute Jamie Soule, who had ghosted between two Yeovil defenders, and he headed in at Day’s near post for his first competitive Weston goal.
