Weston-super-Mare AFC 2 - 0 Truro City
16 Sep 2023 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

Goals from Rex Mannings and Marlon Jackson ensured that Weston progressed in the Emirates FA Cup 2-0 against Truro City.

Rex Mannings had the game’s first chance when he was found inside the area, and after sidestepping his man, his low attempt was blocked by a Truro defender.

The Seagulls were to get their noses in front when Sam Avery’s long ball over the top found James Dodd making a run in behind, on his 100th appearance for the club. The midfielder held the ball up and managed to find Marlon Jackson in the box, whose backheel took two Truro defenders out of the game and allowed Mannings to take a touch before finishing beyond James Hamon for 1-0.

A second was to follow when Mannings latched onto a long ball over the top, competing with the onrushing Hamon for the ball. The ball squirmed free for a Truro defender, but Mannings was up quickly to win the ball and find Jackson inside the box, who swept home on his left foot from 12 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.

James Morton volleyed over for Weston from 25 yards when Dayle Grubb’s cross was headed clear, before Opi Edwards’ shot across goal following some patient buildup play narrowly avoided Sam Avery at the back post. Dan Sullivan had a low drive from inside the area blocked by Avery, while Hamon pushed away Morton’s 25-yard shot.

Weston had a goal disallowed early in the second half for a foul when Grubb’s free-kick was headed in by Morton, before Adam Porter fired wide from 25 yards on his left foot for the visitors and Sullivan dragged past the post from a similar distance when taking the ball on the half-turn.

Andrew Neal then had a shot deflected wide by Avery from 18 yards after blocking the defender’s clearance before Harry Lee was called into action for the first time of the afternoon when pushing aside a long-range effort from Truro substitute Tyler Harvey. Mannings then went close when beating his man 18 yards out from a Grubb pass and looking to place his shot toward the bottom corner, but Hamon was equal to the attempt and tipped the shot round the post.

Truro had a chance when the ball was laid off to Ryan Brett 20 yards out, and his left-footed shot was deflected wide by a Weston body.
