Weston-super-Mare v Bath City SFA Quarter Final

Weston super Mare 3 - 0 Bath City
21 Feb 2017 - 19:45The Woodspring Stadium

The Seagulls ran away with a 3-0 win over rivals Bath City at the Woodspring Stadium courtesy of a brace from Jamie Reid and a tap-in from Jamie Chamberlain in the quarter final of the Somerset Premier Cup.

With both sides choosing to rotate their squads, Liam Kingston made his competitive debut for Weston, along with Jake Reid & Jake Lee, in addition to Tommy Anderson seeing himself restored to the starting line-up, it was a starting XI that showed how much strength in depth Scott Bartlett has available to him.

Weston started the strongest, with the front four of Mohamed Chemlal, Chamberlain, Reid and Lee all being given licence to roam in the final third. Reid curled a shot narrowly wide of the post in the opening exchanges as Weston pressure began to tell early on.

Weston were able to open the scoring on the half-hour mark when an advanced Jacob Cane got beyond his marker before finding Reid on the edge of the area. Reid managed to beat the last defender before firing a shot into the roof of the net to break the deadlock.

The 29 year-old then came close again a few moments later when a loose ball broke to the recent signing from Chelmsford. He took a touch before his shot from 18 yards cracked off the crossbar and flew over the main stand.

Weston chalked up a second goal minutes before half-time when a Chemlal corner was met by the head of Reid, who headed down and into the ground. Chamberlain brought it under control, before swivelling and volleying through the keeper’s legs from a few yards out.

Weston continued to attack in the second half and when Jason Pope got the ball in the box midway through the half, he cut back for Reid, who side-footed past the keeper first-time to seal Weston’s place in the Semi-Finals.

Gethyn Hill had a huge chance to make it 4-0 when he latched on to a long ball out from the back and when one-on-one, Bath keeper Ben Reed got a vital touch to divert the ball round the post late on.

At the time of writing Weston were awaiting to learn if they will either face Taunton Town, Keynsham Town or Brislington FC in the semi-final.
