Grubb Beauty Completes A Weston Comeback
A sunny Summer afternoon fixture at the Woodspring Stadium sees two well-taken goals from Jake Reid and Dayle Grubb, earning Weston a point when they looked down and out with 15 minutes remaining with a 2 – 2 final score.
Weston aimed to capitalise on their crossing ability as the game began, Jake Lee’s glancing header from a Danny Greenslade cross tipped over the bar by Chippenham keeper Jared Thompson.
Dan Bowman’s delivery towards the back post midway through the half saw Jake Andrews head the ball wide of the post, before David Pratt was the next to side-foot wide from a Dan Bowman cross at the back post for the visitors.
Chippenham took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Pratt was set clear, outpacing Lee, despite Luke Purnell closing down the angle, Pratt slotted the ball into the net.
Following the interval, Jake Mawford effort was poked straight at Thompson from a Jacob Cane knock-down.
The introduction of Tristan Plummer changed the game, his weaving run moments after his introduction allowed Jake Reid to get a shot off, only to be charged down by multiple defenders.
Cane’s driven effort was smothered by Thompson, with Pratt’s deflected shot being dived upon by Purnell following a Chippenham counter a minute later.
Matt Smith’s shot, appeared to be travelling wide for Chippenham, taking a heavy deflection on its way towards the goal and beating Purnell with its unexpected changed in direction.
The Seagulls continued in their search for a goal, finding it when Greenslade’s corner was nodded home at the back post by Reid.
Weston then scored a well-earned equaliser, based on their second half performance, Bowman’s headed clearance was poor, allowing Grubb to take the ball down on his chest and strike a half-volley past Thompson at his near post.
Cane saw his side-footed effort from the edge of the area parried behind for a corner, with the keeper performing yet more heroics for Chippenham and again parrying a 30-yard drive from Ashley Kington, destined for the top corner.
