Weston-super-Mare v North Leigh

Weston-super-Mare 3 - 0 North Leigh
25 Oct 2022 - 19:45The Optima Stadium

A Scott Laird brace and a Lloyd Humphries screamer from long range saw Scott Bartlett’s men beat North Leigh 3-0.

The Seagulls wasted no time in breaking the deadlock when a free-kick was earned out on the left wing. Skipper Dayle Grubb swung a perfect delivery into the box, and Laird ghosted in unmarked to glance a header past Adam North into the far corner for 1-0.

A second goal was to follow just 14 minutes later when Jordan Bastin patiently played a pass to Humphries just inside the Weston half. Travelling over halfway and to the other side of the centre circle, the Welshman took the entire crowd by surrpise when firing a stunning shot from at least 35 yards over the rooted North and into the back of the net for 2-0.

Jack Alexander then had North Leigh’s first chance from a Jordan Thomas corner, but his downward header at the back post was wide of Luke Purnell’s near post. Jay Murray almost stole in at the back post to meet a wicked Laird delivery, but Michael Hopkins intervened at the crucial moment to head behind for a corner.

Humphries then had the final chance of the half when a long free-kick found him outside the area on the other side of the pitch, his curling strike just over the bar moments before half-time.

Grubb had the first chance of the second half when Laird’s cross was headed away to him 12 yards from goal, and his toe-poke rippled the sidenetting just the wrong side of North’s goal. Half-time substitute Elis Watts also had a chance with his first involvement in the game by cutting inside, but his low effort was deflected behind for a corner. Humphries also came close again when meeting a dinked Grubb corner, but his volley was cleared off the line from 12 yards.

Substitute Ben Griffith had a shot from inside the area before Jacob Jagger-Cane’s follow-up was again blocked by a yellow shirt.

Laird was to get his second of the night 12 minutes from time when he met a Grubb corner only a few yards out from goal, and his downward header beat North and the stretching North Leigh defender on the line to find the net.

Luke Carnell had the final chance of the game for the visitors when he rose to meet a corner six yards out, but headed over Purnell’s goal.

Despite some late North Leigh pressure from set pieces, the Seagulls held onto their comfortable lead to secure a 10th league win in 13 games this league campaign.
