Weston-super-Mare v Tiverton Town

Weston-super-Mare 2 - 1 Tiverton Town
10 Apr 2023 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

A goal from Marlon Jackson five minutes into the second half saw the Seagulls come out on top against Tiverton Town 2-1.

Jason Pope had the game’s first shot when firing wide from 20 yards after receiving the ball, before Luke Purnell held a Niall Thompson effort. Lucas Vowles curled an effort wide of the target against his former side, while down the other end Jackson drove over from 20 yards after working himself a yard of space.

Lloyd Humphries was forced to bravely head a vicious Tom Purrington volley over his own crossbar which looked destined for the target, while Sam Avery had a shot from 25 yards pushed round the post by Lewis Williams after playing a 1-2 with Scott Laird down the left.

Weston found the net for the first time when a quick attack saw Jackson turn his man and with options scarce, he flicked a pass into Olly Mehew with his back to goal inside the area. The striker had the presence of mind to flick a subtle first-time pass onto Jordan Bastin beside him, who fired beyond Williams to make it 1-0.

It didn’t take long for the Seagulls to double their advantage, with Jackson again at the heart of things five minutes into the second half. Laird was found on the left side of the area, whose cut-back came to Jackson 12 yards out. With numerous players around him, he turned away from them all with one swift turn before firing in off the crossbar on his left foot for his 16th goal of the season.

Purrington tried pulling one back for Tiverton, but he volleyed over the crossbar after Dylan Jones’ cross fell his way.

The visitors did get one back though when a Craig Woodman free-kick found Ed James at the back post, whose header down was swept home on the volley by Matt Britton for 2-1.

Vowles fired wide of the near post after latching onto a Joe Belsten pass over the top, before Laird drove wide from 30 yards when given space to shoot. Purnell did well to hold a long-range Jones effort, before some excellent keep-ball from Weston in the final third saw out a vital win.
