Weston-super-Mare v Yeovil Town

Weston-super-Mare 0 - 1 Yeovil Town
30 Jul 2022 - 15:00The Optima Stadium

An early Alex Fisher penalty saw Weston lose 1-0 to Yeovil in what was a pleasing performance to end the pre-season campaign.

Dayle Grubb had the game’s first opportunity when he cut inside following neat interchange between him, Scott Laird and James Dodd, but he curled wide of the target from 18 yards. Malachi Linton headed wide when rising to meet a Jamie Reckord cross, and the same combination led to Max Harris being forced to hold Reckord’s header.

The Glovers were to take the lead eight minutes in when Reckord brought the ball down inside the box, and Keiran Thomas brought him down when sliding in. Striker Alex Fisher stepped up to the spot, and he drove his penalty low to Harris’ right into the corner despite the loanee going the right way.

Linton drove wide from 25 yards after escaping the attentions of Lloyd Humphries, and the forward went close again when he got the ball inside the box but Max Harris held the strike at the second attempt. The first clear opening for the Seagulls came when a nice move led to Reuben Reid getting the ball in the box, and after beating his marker, his left-footed shot was held by Grant Smith. The final chance of the half went Weston’s way after James Dodd was played into the box, and after checking back, his pull-back to Grubb 12 yards out led to the captain’s shot being held by Smith.

In the second half, Reid had the first chance when bringing down Humphries’ long ball 18 yards out, but the shot on the half-volley was just over the bar. Linton went close for Yeovil when latching onto a loose ball after Fisher had intercepted Jason Pope’s pass out of defence, but his strike clattered into the side netting. Substitute Elis Watts had a chance when cutting inside from the right, his strike from the edge of the box going wide of the target.

Jack Holmes had a swerving strike from 25 yards go narrowly over the crossbar, before Jacob Jagger-Cane had a glancing header from a Humphries free-kick go narrowly over the bar in the final action of the half.
