Weston-super-Mare AFC are delighted to announce that midfielder Jacob Jagger Cane and defender Jason Pope have both signed long-term contract extensions.
Since joining the club in the summer of 2014 from Exeter City, Jagger Cane spent five years at the heart of the Weston midfield before spending a short spell on loan with us from Hereford during the 2019/2020 season. He then re-joined permanently in the summer of 2020.
During his time in BS24, Jacob has played 347 games, scoring 19 goals and assisting 31.
After signing his contract extension, Jacob said:
I’m really happy to be extending my stay at Weston-super-Mare AFC.
“It’s been a brilliant and successful last couple of seasons, the most enjoyable of my career and I imagine many others that have been a part of it would say the exact same.
“I love everyone here, the fans are different class, and to see how much the club has come on over the years both on and off the pitch is a credit to everyone involved, it’s only getting better and better!
“Hopefully we can be successful again in the National League South which I really believe we can, and I’d love to play a part in that. Up the Seagulls!”
Pope spent the 2015-2016 season on loan from Exeter City before signing permanently the following summer. After a couple of years away between 2019 – 2021, Jason returned to the club ahead of the 2021-2022 season and has been a mainstay in the squad since.
Across his two spells with the Seagulls, Jason has played 275 games, scoring seven and assisting 26.
I’m delighted to have extended my contract with the club. Since I returned to the club it has gone from strength to strength.
“I’ve had the greatest moments of my footballing career with Weston when we gained promotion to the National League South last season.
“I have a great relationship with everyone involved with the club both on and off the pitch, so it’s a no brainer for me to extend my contract. I believe we can be successful in the NLS and I’m excited to play a part in it.”
On Jacob and Jason both committing their futures to the club, First Team Manager Scott Bartlett said:
The biggest compliment we can pay Jacob is that we as staff always feel like we have a chance of winning with him in the team, his attitude, quality and work rate are outstanding.
“Jason has been a consistent performer in a number of positions for us, both he and Jacob are brilliant to work with.
“They set a good example day in day out and are very important members of our group.
“As we continue to improve it is important we keep a stable base and these two know the club inside out.”
