Weston-super-Mare AFC are delighted to announce that Wales C goalkeeper Kelland Absalom has joined the club from Bala Town.

Kelland has good experience within the Welsh leagues, having featured for Barry Town United, Penybont and Bala in recent seasons.

The 26-year-old also received his first Wales C cap in March, playing the full 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over England C.

On signing Kelland, Manager Scott Bartlett said:

Kelland is a very good goalkeeper, he has had some good experiences both abroad and in the Welsh Premier League and is a good age for us.

“He has a lot of attributes we identified as important to us in the way we want to play, he is also very comfortable with the ball at his feet and has excellent distribution.

“We are looking forward to working with him”.

After joining the Seagulls, Kelland said:

I’m really excited.

“Scott’s ambition was the biggest thing for me, he said that the club’s going places, there’s good people behind the scenes and we really want to kick on from here”.

“I’ve known a few people who have played here before and they’ve said that it’s a hell of a club to be at”.

About Kelland

Kelland began his career in the Swansea City Centre of Excellence before moving on to Cardiff City’s Academy when he was 12, staying there for four years until he was let go at the age of 16. While searching for a new club, he trialled with Arsenal’s Under-16s side.

In the summer of 2014, he joined Wigan Athletic’s Under-18s side on a two-year scholarship before signing a professional deal in 2016. The goalkeeper was then released upon the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2017. Before turning professional at Wigan, he featured for Norwich City’s Under-18s side in April 2016, a 2-1 defeat to Derby County’s Under-18s side.

In July 2017, he moved abroad to Sweden’s Fifth Division, signing for Ytterhogdals IK. The team achieved promotion to the Fourth Division that same year by winning the title, Kelland a regular during the sticks across almost two years there.

In March 2019, he signed for Swedish First Division club Ostersunds FK, an unused substitute five times during a brief spell there before leaving in June 2019.

He would return to play football in Wales, signing for Cymru South (Wales Second Division) side Haverfordwest County in January 2020. The keeper would play regularly for the club until Covid hit, Haverfordwest being awarded promotion to the Cymru Premier for a second-placed finish that same year.

Kelland signed for Southern League Premier Division South side Merthyr Town in the summer of 2020, but due to Wales’ lockdown rules, was unable to pull on the Merthyr shirt in a competitive fixture.

In February 2021, he signed for Cymru South team Carmarthen United but again was unable to play due to Covid rules.

In August 2021, the young goalkeeper signed for Cymru Premier side Barry Town United to provide competition within their goalkeeping ranks. During his year at Barry, he made nine appearances and kept two clean sheets, being an unused substitute 25 times.

In the summer of 2022, he joined Cymru Premier team Penybont and made 26 appearances, keeping nine clean sheets. He would be named as an unused substitute nine times across the 23-24 season as well.

In July 2023, Kelland was on the move again, this time signing for Cymru Premier side Bala Town. At Bala, his stock continued to rise through some impressive performances in between the sticks, keeping 12 clean sheets in 36 games. He even scored a goal for Bala, a clearance from inside his own penalty area ending up in the back of the net against Caerau.

He has also been recognised internationally across the years, being capped six times for Wales U17s in the 2014-2015 season (3 clean sheets), once for Wales U21s in 2019 and once for Wales C in March 2024, which saw him keep a clean sheet against England C.
