Weston-super-Mare AFC can confirm the departure of long-serving goalkeeper Luke Purnell.
Luke spent time with our under 18s and played a few first-team games before leaving in 2010, returning in 2013 and spending the next decade with the club.
Across his time with Weston, Luke has made 355 appearances but will now depart for another challenge.
Manager Scott Bartlett said:
Luke will be missed, he has given brilliant service to the club, and to myself personally.
“In my first season here, he was simply outstanding.
“Luke is now at a point where he wants to go in a different direction. I had hoped he would stay until the end of the season but his position is understandable.
“So, reluctantly we accept his decision and thank him for his service, in particular his patience in the past two seasons. I know it would have been hard for him not playing regularly and he only stayed to do that for us because of his affection to the club and the supporters.
“I’m really happy he had a big part to play in our promotion.
“Personally, I had hoped with a little bit of time I might have been able to persuade him to stay for longer but we agree that now is the right time to allow him to go, enabling him to make the best choice for him and his family.
“Of course, we wish him well with his future”.
The club has been such a significant part of my life and I’m extremely proud to have been able to represent my home town for so long.
“Firstly, I want to thank the lads for everything on and off the pitch.
“Secondly, thanks to the staff and the wider staff body for the continued support over the years. You really are the backbone of the success.
“Finally, the fans… I am so grateful to you all. You have stuck with me through the highs and the lows. You guys are amazing and I wish you the success you deserve going forward”.
Everyone at Weston-super-Mare AFC would like to thank Luke for his major contribution to the club. We wish him all the best for the future.
