Laker began his career playing as a goalkeeper within the Plymouth Argyle Academy but failed to make it with the Pilgrims.
He eventually went on to play for various teams in the Western League and Somerset County League, including Bridgwater Town.
Laker began coaching with Bridgwater Town as their goalkeeping coach as well as managing their Reserve team in the Somerset County League Premier Division during 2013-2014, before he stepped into management with Western League Premier Division side Bishop Sutton in January 2015. His spell with the club didn’t end on the best note however, as he failed to keep them up and they ultimately suffered relegation. He went on to make six appearances for Bishop Sutton during his time as manager and was an unused substitute eight times.
In July 2016, he made the move to Street FC as a coach, where he was also an unused substitute 15 times.
The goalkeeper coach was back in management in time for the 2017-2018 season as he joined Western League Premier Division side Wells City. Steve was an unused substitute 10 times during his managerial stint with the city side.
Following his exit from Wells, Laker moved to Bridgwater Town during October 2017. As well as being the club’s goalkeeping coach, he made four appearances and was an unused substitute 42 times during his spell at Fairfax Park.
Laker then linked up with the Seagulls at the start of March 2020 as he became the club’s new goalkeeper coach.
