Weston are ready to welcome Chesham United to The Optima Stadium on Tuesday night.
After waiting 38 days since the last competitive game, it’s back to action on Tuesday as Weston play for a place in the FA Trophy Second Round.
Chesham progressed through to the first round of the FA Trophy after beating Whyteleafe 3-2 on penalties, with the 90 minutes finishing 2-2. The Seagulls avoided a penalty shootout to get through the qualifying round, thanks to a 92nd minute strike from Matt Jones, ending the game 2-1.
The last time we hosted Chesham saw a 2-1 loss for Weston, despite a 14th minute equaliser from Laird.
Manager Scott Bartlett said:
It’s going to be a strange game being our first one for a while and also without our supporters which is a huge shame. We have trained hard and the players have come back in good shape — all credit to them for that because although it’s what we expected and demanded, we also appreciate that it’s been a difficult time for everyone, particularly for the boys that live within our tier 3 area.
We have now had the expected news from the league that we will not start back yet which is a blow. We know at the moment we definitely won’t be playing until the 19th of December but we also know it’s very likely that’ll be extended to January. In my mind we could have resolved this issue with a modest grant funding to cover the loss of earnings for clubs operating within both tier 2 and tier 3 areas, it would also be a lot more cost effective than the current furlough scheme.
I’d like to welcome Lucas Vowles to the club, he’s a good young player and we are looking forward to working with him and helping him develop. Unfortunately, he is cup-tied for the game but we are looking forward to him making his debut in the near future.
