THE SEAGULLS CLASH WITH THE FOXES IN SOMERSET PREMIER CUP

Weston make a midweek trip to Bristol as they take on Brislington in the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup this Tuesday, 19th March. The match kicks off at 7:30pm.

Following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Welling United in Vanarama National League South, where James Dodd scored his sixth goal of another excellent campaign, attention now quickly turns to a competition that The Seagulls have won four times in the last fourteen seasons, a good achievement considering the calibre of some of the other Somerset clubs participating. The last final success came in July 2019, after beating Taunton Town 2-1 in the final at the Optima Stadium.

To get to this stage of the competition, Rex Mannings worked his magic both off and on the pitch before and during the 9-0 victory over Hengrove Athletic, before a battling performance at Twerton Park saw The Seagulls oust Bath City 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

The Foxes’ journey to the semi-final has seen them overcome Welton Rovers (2-1) and Bishop Sutton (4-0), before a fine 2-0 victory at Clevedon Town in the previous round.

Brislington’s Western League Division One game at Portishead Town was postponed on Saturday, meaning their last game was a 2-0 win against Shirehampton

There will be some familiar faces in the ‘Bris’ line-up as Jordan Williams, Ben Withey, Joe McClennan and Ash Kington have all played in the white shirts of Weston with some distinction in recent seasons.

Tuesday’s game will be Weston’s first visit to Ironmould Lane since a 2-1 victory in March 2017, also at the semi-final stage of the Somerset Premier Cup. Goals from Jake Reid and Jamie Laird saw The Seagulls into the final.

With both teams now so close to the final of the competition, an intriguing encounter at Ironmould Lane awaits.
