Walking Football is exactly what it says on the tin:

Walking Football is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a minimal contact, small-sided, sport, where running is prohibited. The motto of the Walking Football Association is Fun, Friendship and Fitness.

Walking football is played by older adults (over 50s for men and over 18 for the women). Weston Walking FC is part of Weston-super-Mare Football Club. We hold several fun sessions each week for players of all levels and abilities, as well as fielding strong over 50s, over 60s, and 65s teams in the Somerset and Gloucester FA leagues and in the National Cup competitions for those who enjoy more competitive matches.

In 2020, the Walking Football Association named WSM WFC as a Commended Team of the Year and our own Lach Geddes received the Grassroots Coach of the Year Award.

What are the Benefits of Walking Football?

Apart from being able to rekindle a passion of youth or to learn to play a new sport in older adulthood, walking football offers many other health and wellbeing benefits. Studies have shown that regular walking football sessions can have a major impact on wellbeing. Walking football can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve blood pressure. It can make a positive change to your cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and bone density and can help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. It has also been shown to be an important tool to maintaining cognitive abilities, known to decline in older adulthood, and to improve mental health, with studies showing significantly reduced levels of depression in walking footballers. WSM WFC is also a great way to socialise and meet new people. When Covid protocols permit, players are often found in the club lounge after the session putting the world to rights.

To quote one member of the club: “Walking football was life-changing for me.”
