WESTON HEAD TO BRIDGWATER UNITED IN SOMERSET PREMIER CUP

Weston are in Somerset Premier Cup action this Wednesday, 15th February as they make the very short trip to Bridgwater United. The match kicks off at 7:45pm.

This is the second game between the two sides at Fairfax Park this season, as The Seagulls won by four goals to nil in a pre-season friendly back in July. Goals that evening came from Marlon Jackson, Dayle Grubb, Ben Griffith and Elis Watts.

That game was full of first-team players as Weston prepared themselves for the upcoming Southern League Premier South campaign. But with the games coming so thick and fast for several weeks to come now, Scott Bartlett will look to this fixture to rest his first-team players and instead give more experience to Under 19s players. Indeed, wins in the previous rounds against Shepton Mallet and Welton Rovers have been obtained via youthful looking Weston sides.

As for Bridgwater, they have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup after a 5-0 win at Cheddar in the Second Round. United were given a bye in the First Round ahead of that game at Bowdens Park.

Bridgwater were also in cup action last Saturday, as they hosted Ascot United in the Fifth Round of the FA Vase. However, their hopes and dreams of playing at Wembley were sadly dashed after their 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Ascot’s 79th minute winner.

Weston were in Southern League action on Saturday in another game with only one goal, as Sam Avery applied the finishing touch late on to seal a vital three points for The Seagulls.

While the league remains the undoubted priority for Weston, it should be a good game at Fairfax Park and a good test for the players who are selected for action.
