WESTON HEAD TO FARNBOROUGH FOR FA CUP ACTION

The magic of the cup returns this weekend as Weston are in FA Cup Third Qualifying Round action at Farnborough this Saturday, 30th September. The match kicks off at 3pm.

Following the victory over Truro City in the previous round, The Seagulls were handed an eventual away tie against Farnborough, although Spencer Day’s side required a replay to knock out Wingate & Finchley. After a draw in North London, Farnborough ran out 6-0 winners to earn their home tie with Weston.

With both sides competing well in the Vanarama National League South, it’s a tough tie for both teams. However, Farnborough will be encouraged by their 3-0 victory over Weston at Cherrywood Road at the end of August. One of the scorers that day, Alfie Pavey, joined Woking in the last few days after a short but successful spell with the club.

Since that defeat five weeks ago, The Seagulls have found some good form after the cup and league win over Truro City, as Keiran Thomas’ thunderbolt at Bolitho Park last Saturday saw Weston return home with all three points.

It is nearly twenty years since the last FA Cup clash between Weston and Farnborough, and older Seagulls fans will remember the magnificent 1-0 win at Cherrywood Road in the First Round proper in November 2003. In a Weston side that fielded the likes of Stuart Jones, Stuart Slater and Mark McKeever, Billy Clark scored the only goal that day to help Weston into the Second Round proper, the furthest Weston have ever reached in this prestigious cup competition.

Having reached the Fourth Qualifying round last year, another enjoyable cup run will be most welcome, therefore it should make for a good game in Hampshire this Saturday.

Should the tie be level after 90 minutes, a replay will take place at the Optima Stadium in the week commencing 2nd October.
