WESTON TRAVEL TO BASINGSTOKE FOR FA CUP ACTION

Weston move their attention to cup action as they visit Basingstoke Town in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round. The game at Winklebury kicks off at 3pm this Saturday, September 3rd.

Basingstoke play their football in Step 4, one below Weston, in the Isthmian South Central Division. Town come into this game against table-topping Weston in somewhat inconsistent and indifferent form. Monday’s 2-0 home loss to Binfield is evidence of this.

While Weston join the competition at this stage, Basingstoke had to play a preliminary round tie at Lymington Town and succeeded with a resounding 6-0 victory.

It has been six years since The Seagulls and Basingstoke last met, with the two sides facing each other twice in the space of a week in April 2016 in Conference South action. Dayle Grubb’s brace secured a 2-1 victory at the Woodspring Stadium, then in the return fixture at The Camrose, Weston fought back from 2-0 down to grab a 2-2 draw after goals from Ollie Barnes and a Scott Wilson penalty.

Sadly, the much-loved Camrose ground is no longer a footballing venue as Basingstoke are now based at the Hampshire FA at Winklebury.

With Weston in red-hot form in the league right now, an opportunity to progress in the FA Cup is sure to keep the spirits of the players and the supporters in a good place as we head into a busy September.

If the game is level after 90 minutes, the replay will take place at The Optima Stadium on Tuesday, September 6th at 7:45pm.
